The CCSE is the test required by the Ministry of Justice in most nationality-by-residence applications. It assesses constitutional and sociocultural knowledge of Spain; it is not a Spanish-language exam, and it is not the DELE A2.
Current practice
Prepare with the official 2026 materials.
The Instituto Cervantes updates the CCSE question bank periodically. Its free 2026 manual, model test and app are the reference materials for practising with the current examination content.
Open official materialsThe short answer
You have 45 minutes to answer 25 closed questions: multiple choice with three options, and true or false. You pass with 15 correct answers. Wrong and blank answers are not penalised. Preparation can be online, but the official test must be sat in person at an authorised examination centre.
01 · The essential facts
One test. Two areas of knowledge.
CCSE stands for Conocimientos constitucionales y socioculturales de España. The Instituto Cervantes designs and administers the test for nationality procedures covered by the applicable rules.
Government and citizenship
Institutions, laws, rights, duties, participation and Spain’s territorial organisation account for 60% of the questions.
Culture and society
History, traditions, culture, daily life and administrative procedures account for the remaining 40%.
CCSE is not DELE
The CCSE checks knowledge about Spain. The DELE A2 checks Spanish-language ability. Both tests are taken in Spanish, but the CCSE does not measure your language: it measures what you know about Spain. Depending on your nationality, the Ministry of Justice will require both, or only the CCSE.
02 · The five tasks
Twenty-five questions, not twenty-five of the same kind.
The test mixes multiple-choice and true-or-false questions. The distribution matters because most of the paper concerns government, law and civic participation.
| Task | Questions | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Task 1 | 10 · multiple choice | Government, institutions, fundamental laws and civic participation. |
| Task 2 | 3 · true or false | Rights and duties connected with Spanish nationality. |
| Task 3 | 2 · multiple choice | Territorial organisation and physical and political geography. |
| Task 4 | 3 · multiple choice | Traditions, culture, art and relevant historical events. |
| Task 5 | 7 · multiple choice | Daily life, social behaviour and administrative procedures. |
03 · The pass mark
Fifteen correct answers.
Each correct answer receives one point. Incorrect and unanswered questions receive zero, with no additional penalty. 15 out of 25, or 60%, produces the result “Apto”. The Instituto Cervantes normally publishes results around 20 days after the test.
04 · Dates in Spain
The exam date and the registration deadline are different dates.
These are the ordinary 2026 calls published for Spain. Places can fill before the closing date, so use the official portal to check availability and your chosen centre.

The official price currently published is €85. It includes the examination rights, the electronic result certificate and access to preparation materials. Under the Instituto Cervantes conditions, an unsuccessful or missed first sitting can give access to a second opportunity without paying again, subject to its time and centre rules.
05 · Preparation
Use the 2026 manual, not an old collection of questions.
The Instituto Cervantes renewed 25% of the official question bank for 2026. Its current manual, model test, multilingual glossary, audio materials and official mobile app are free. Any online practice page is secondary to those sources.
Start with the current manual
Confirm that the material explicitly says 2026. An older test can rehearse the format while still teaching outdated answers.
Practise recall, not only recognition
Explain why an answer is correct before checking the options. That exposes gaps that repeated multiple-choice practice can hide.
Rehearse the paper once under time
Forty-five minutes is usually sufficient, but one timed model test removes uncertainty about the answer sheet and task order.
06 · Official sources
Check the source before you trust the date.
